Pottery Needle
One of my favorite tools is a durable but precise metal needle. It is one of the most versatile tools, used for sculpting, scoring, decorating, etc. The only limit is your imagination. However, I do not use the needle tool to trim the top edges of my pieces on the pottery wheel; I prefer the wire cutters for that!
Wire Cut-offs
These come in all sorts of sizes and handle types, but I prefer Mudtools brand. I love their handles and their wire is thin but strong, in my opinion. I use these to cut clay, trim my eges and remove thrown pieces from my bats.
Ribs
These tools are gamechangers for shaping and smooth pots as you throw on the wheel on the wheel. Ribs come in many different shapes and are usually made of hardwood or rubber. I prefer rubber Mudworks brand ones.
Sponges
Sponges are definitely crucial to making great pottery. I use both regular circular pottery sponges and Mudtools white sponge, which leaves an amazingly smooth finish. I like to use my sponges while I pull the walls of my pieces and to smooth the entire piece.
Loop and Ribbon Tools
The curved and rectangular shaped tools are used to trim leatherhard pieces. The trimming process allows excess weight removed, as well as gives me the ability to refine the shape of my piece and clean the bottom. I usually use these to add some sort of foot on my pieces.
Bats
I prefer throwing on Bats since it allows my pieces to firm up a bit before removing them from the wheel. I got these recently and it’s a gamechanger!
